Serving the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Areas

Founded in 1969, the Bay Area Bruins comprise Alumni and Friends of UCLA who are dedicated to promoting and rewarding scholastic excellence while providing a community of personal involvement and service with others having similar interests as ambassadors of the University.

The Bay Area Bruins is a regional chapter of the Association, meaning that all association members that reside within our region are automatically members of the chapter. This differs from a regional club, in which the membership dues are collected separately.

All members automatically receive the Bay Area Bruins newsletter (inserted into the UCLAlumni magazine) and the monthly Connect@UCLA e-mail newsletter from the Association. The Chapter Listserv is also a benefit of membership (see below).

Social Events
Social activities average one per week, chapter-wide. Please consult our Calendar for event details. These events are just for fun and the types of activities vary widely, from happy hours and social dinners to hikes to theater and opera.

You can also have a monthly list of events e-mailed to you! Just provide the Association with your contact information and you will receive the Connect@UCLA newsletter. (Non-members can receive the Connect@UCLA at no charge!) Contact the Alumni Association at (800) UCLAlum.

Scholarship Volunteering
The Bay Area Bruins provides merit-based scholarship to UCLA students that attended High School or Community College in the Bay Area. These scholarships are administered as part of the state-wide Alumni Scholarship Program.

Local volunteers screen and interview candidates and select scholarship winners. Scholarship volunteering season occurs in March/April. Volunteering with the Scholarship Program is a great way to get started with participating in Bay Area Bruins activities!

Contact the Scholarship Office at the Association at (800) UCLAlum or AlumniScholarships@UCLAlumni.net to get involved. To make a donation to our Endowment Fund, please scroll down further.

Community Service Volunteering
The Bay Area Bruins provides an outlet for our alumni to provide service to the community. Activities occur approximately once per quarter. Please consult our Calendar for event details.

Bay Area Bruins / Marijane Viat Memorial Endowment Fund

Established in 1986, the Bay Area Bruins / Marijane Viat Memorial Endowment Fund helps fund the state-wide Alumni Scholarship Program, specifically benefiting students from the Bay Area.

This endowment has grown to over $200,000 primarily through generous contributions made by members of the Bay Area Bruins. Our long-range goal is to be able to make multiple awards each year of an amount sufficient to cover tuition and fees, currently in excess of $7,000 per year. To be able to do this, we need to increase the size of the endowment tenfold.

Several years ago, a core group of Club members made multi-year pledges of $1,000 annually to anchor the endowment. Now, we would like to ask all members and friends of the Bay Area Bruins to contribute whatever amount you feel you can to help us fund these scholarships at a meaningful level. Contributions are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law. The endowment fund is managed by The UCLA Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization.

For more detailed information on the endowment and instructions on setting up a pledge account or making a one-time contribution, please call Steve Gregory, Bay Area Bruins Endowment Chair at (510)272-1363 or e-mail at sgregorywork@gmail.com.

DONATE TODAY: To make a credit-card contribution, visit our Donation Page and direct your gift specifically to our regional "Bay Area Bruins / Marijane Viat Endowment."

Don't forget to check if your company has a donation matching program!
