| Summer Bat Walk | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Date: August 5, 2010 Details: Join the Orange County Bruins for an evening picnic and a unique summer bat walk in the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. We'll barbeque hamburgers and hot dogs, then see an indoor presentation by an Orange County bat expert. She will talk about bat biology, echolocation, myths, and diet. Afterwards, we take a short twilight walk using sonar detectors to locate the two species of bats that come in small numbers to the marsh to feed from their roosts in nearby bridges and buildings. Come discover first-hand that this fresh water wetland is a magical place at dusk. Minimum age to participate is 7. When: Thursday, August 5, 2010, BBQ picnic begins at 5:30PM, lecture and bat walk 7:PM to 9:00PM. Location: San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary, 5 Riparian View, Irvine. When driving south on the San Diego Freeway, (#405), exit on Jamboree and turn right. At the first signal, which is Michelson, turn left. Continue on Michelson to the 4th signal which is Riparian View and turn right toward the Irvine Ranch Water District water treatment plant. Follow the main road and the signs directing you to Audubon, the Duck Club, and the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. You will be on a paved 2-way road for a quarter of a mile. Before you encounter a gate which closes off the rest of the road, signs will direct you to turn right down a short hill and into a parking lot.
