The UCLA Alumni Association is a volunteer-driven organization. Each year, alumni are needed to serve on the UCLA Alumni Association Board of Directors and to share an alumni perspective on many campus boards and governing committees.
Alumni Representatives to Campus Boards
Alumni help direct campus boards responsible for the management of major University organizations. Each alumni representative serves a two-year term beginning summer 2008.
Available positions beginning this summer are for the following campus boards:
ASUCLA is an unincorporated, not-for-profit association that comprises Undergraduate Students Association, Graduate Students Association, Student Media at UCLA and Services & Enterprises.
ASUCLA is an unincorporated, not-for-profit association that has served UCLA since 1919. The UCLA Store, restaurants, student media, student programming, and student government combine to make ASUCLA the catalyst for campus life. ASUCLA comprises four interrelated but financially distinct entities: Undergraduate Students Association, Graduate Students Association, Student Media at UCLA and Services & Enterprises.
ASUCLA is governed by a student-majority board. It begins its year with an annual retreat and holds regularly scheduled board of directors meetings one Friday afternoon each month. Occasionally, special meetings are scheduled to address pressing issues. Each board member serves on at least one additional ASUCLA committee, which meets during the daytime once a month. During the first year of this two-year appointment, the alumni representative will serve as a non-voting member.
The backgrounds of interested candidates may vary; expertise in business, non-profit management, retail, student services, marketing, e-commerce or web could all be useful to the board. Experience in leading a mid-sized company could be particularly helpful.
Overseeing UCLA's student media, the Communications Board governs the activities of the Daily Bruin, yearbook, radio station, on-campus television station, various newsmagazines and internet outlets.
Overseeing UCLA's student media, the Communications Board is composed of 15 members that govern the activities of a daily newspaper, yearbook, radio station, on-campus television station, various newsmagazines and internet outlets. The board has two committees composed of both board members and student editors of the media. Board members attend a summer retreat and meet monthly throughout the year. Typical business includes approval of media budgets, hearing media grievances and appointing media editors and general managers. Financial matters play a key role in discussions of the board, as all media are self-supporting. The ideal candidate is an individual with business or management experience to help guide the business matters of student media. The Communications Board is a student-majority entity.
As the nation's largest university-based camp, UniCamp provides nearly 1,000 children from low-income families with a residential outdoor summer camp experience each year, guided by almost 350 student counselors.
UniCamp was established in 1934 by UCLA students as a Depression-era relief project for needy children. Each year, UniCamp provides nearly 1,000 children from low-income families with a residential outdoor summer camp experience, guided by almost 350 student counselors. UniCamp is the nation's largest university-based camp and is one of the oldest student-organized charities in the country.
UniCamp’s community-based, 24 member board of trustees includes 14 to 18 community trustees, four UCLA student trustees and a representative of the UCLA chancellor, executive director of ASUCLA and the UCLA Alumni Association Board of Directors. The board of trustees meets four times per year for approximately two hours at a time and date of their choosing. Members attend committee meetings and a yearly two-day retreat off campus.
UniCamp is seeking an individual passionate about the work of UniCamp to help guide the organization. Because UniCamp is a self-funded non-profit organization, much of the focus of the board is around raising funds. Individuals who can assist with fundraising or those with entrepreneurial skills are encouraged to apply.
In addition to the specific board duties, alumni representatives serve as the liaison between the board and the Alumni Association. They should understand the Association’s Strategic Plan and communicate regularly with the Association about issues pertaining to the organization or alumni in general. alumni representatives will be asked to submit periodic written reports to the Association’s Board of Directors, and are expected to support key Association interests or programs. Candidates should be UCLA degree holders, members of the Alumni Association and enjoy working with student-majority boards.

Alumni Association Board of Directors
The Alumni Association Board of Directors provides governance, strategic planning and fiduciary oversight for the Association. It manages its work through several standing and ad hoc committees. In addition to the five officers, the board is composed of directors and ex-officio members representing key areas of campus.

The following positions are available on the board beginning July 1, 2008.
- General Counsel (two-year term)
The general counsel is an officer of the board, who guides the legal decisions of the Association. This includes reviewing contracts, tax and related matters, and the propriety of corporate procedures affecting the Association. The general counsel advises the president concerning questions of order and procedure.
- Treasurer (two-year term)
The treasurer is an officer of the board, who guides the financial decisions of the Association. This includes budget review, financial planning and disbursement of funds of the Association in accordance with policies established by the board. The treasurer serves as chair of the Finance Committee.
