A professional career counselor helps people make decisions and plans related to life and career directions. Strategies and techniques are tailored to the individual. Counselors may assist in several ways.

• Conduct individual and group counseling sessions.
• Administer and interpret tests and inventories to assess abilities, interests and career options.
• Encourage exploratory activities through assignments and planning exercises.
• Use career planning systems and occupational information to identify and use systems to help individuals better understand the work world.
• Assist in developing résumés.
