Professor Ruiz, former department chair and Premio del Rey prize for best book in Spanish history before 1580 for his Crisis and Continuity: Land and Town in Late Medieval Castile, was speaker for the UCLA History Alumni Faculty Lecture, cohosted by the UCLA Alumni Association and UCLA Department of History. Ruiz spoke to an audience of more than 80 history department alumni and guests. Watch his lively and engaging presentation.

A distinguished professor in the UCLA Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Rundel studies the adaptations of plants to environmental stress, focusing on Mediterranean, desert and tropical ecosystems. His studies extend to applications of environmental sensor arrays for ecological research.

UCLA Department of Mathematics Commencement
Speaker: Danica McKellar ’98

Perhaps most famous for her role on The Wonder Years, McKellar has since established her credentials in the field of mathematics. As an undergraduate, she co-published research now named for her, the Chayes-McKellar-Winn Theorem. In August 2007, McKellar published a math book for middle school girls, Math Doesn't Suck: How to Survive Middle School Math Without Losing Your Mind or Breaking a Nail.

Mock entered service with the California Army National Guard in 1973. After serving in a number of roles, in August 2004, Major General Mock was mobilized for Operation Iraqi Freedom for service at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. On redeployment, MG Mock assumed command of the 63d Regional Readiness Command, Los Alamitos, California. Mock's awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters, NATO Medal, Parachute Badge, Special Forces Tab, and the Canadian Parachute Badge. In civilian life, he is retired after 25 years of service in the Los Angeles Police Department.

Currently president of Centerbridge Industrial Partners, LLC, Girsky delivered the 2007 commencement address for the UCLA Department of Economics. Girsky has been ranked the No. 1 automotive and auto parts analyst by Institutional Investor’s “All-American Research Team” annual investor poll for 12 consecutive years.
