Associate Professor Mariko Tamanoi teaches and conducts research in historical anthropology. She is the author of three books, Under the Shadow of Nationalism: Politics and Poetics of Rural Japanese Women, Crossed Histories: Manchuria in the Age of Empire and the upcoming Memory Maps: The State and Manchuria in Postwar Japan. Born and raised in Japan, Tamanoi came to the United States as a Fulbright scholar, and currently is studying the changing conception of nationality and citizenship in East Asia.
