Professor Janice Reiff MORE »
Jan Reiff is a member of the history and statistics departments and also serves as the associate director of UCLA's Institute for Social Science Research. Reiff spent much of her life near the Great Lakes, having lived in Chicago and Cleveland and enjoyed summers in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The Great Lakes have also been a large part of her research and teaching agenda. A scholar of Chicago, located on the southwestern edge of Lake Michigan, she has studied the region's economy, population, and ecology. Her research and editing as a co-editor of the Encyclopedia of Chicago engaged her with the Great Lakes from a variety of perspectives, both past and present. In addition, as a graduate student she participated in the preparation of the Atlas of Great Lakes Indian History. Most recently, her work on Chicago's role in a global economy has focused her attention on the Midwest as a transnational region with the Great Lakes at its center.
