Dear [[first_name]],

Artists subsist on air and water, or so it may seem. So when a donor to UCLA arrives with a gift approaching $20 million, for an arts department, subsistence takes on a new meaning. Glorya Kaufman utterly changed the future of the Department of World Arts and Cultures by funding a significant portion of the renovation of our historic building. Even as we thank Mrs. Kaufman for her generosity, we find ourselves needing support for everything that goes on inside the building, from endowed professorships to scholarships. Those who see our beautiful home - and we invite you to do just that on Oct. 22 - wouldn't think we need it. Artists live on air and water, right? But without alumni support we're nothing more than a bunch of pretty buildings.

--David Gere
Associate Professor and Acting Chair,
UCLA Department of World Arts and Cultures
